Which is better to try to cheer your child up when they are discouraged or to listen carefully?   In this episode  we will discuss how to give the best emotional support you can.

Hey all y‘all friends and listeners of the Happiness Ladder.

I want to tell you about a study on happiness that started in 1938 asking What makes us happy?   So every two years for 85 years 724 participants from all over the world,

Guess what they found?  It wasn’t health or wealth or achievement that made them happy, it was

Close relationships and social connection

Dr. Robert Waldinger, MD the is the Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development and from this study he wrote a book called “The Good Life”, He states that

good relationships "keep us healthier and happier." People with more robust social connections showed lower rates of diabetes, arthritis, cognitive decline, and other chronic conditions. He and his research team hypothesize that close relationships act as "stress regulators"—they help our bodies calm down and return to equilibrium after being revved up by challenging events.

And those people who were most successful at this didn’t just leave it to chance." He noted that they intentionally nurtured their in-person social connections.

So, in the Happiness ladder, I’ve been podcasting about the 6 things that happy people have in common: Health, God, Growth, Gratitude Charity and Connection.  I’m going to take off in just one of those 6 and Podcast about how to nurture your social connection.
